Success in School and Life:  Good Luck or a Learned Skill?

Twin Cities Author and Educator Separates Fact From Fiction

MINNEAPOLIS (April 17, 2014) — Preparing students to be successful in school requires more than innovative teaching tools in the classroom. Success is not a matter of good luck or fate; it’s a learned skill. National education expert and author Megan Stone discovered during her years teaching in the classroom and coaching students that the problem was not with the subjects being taught, it was with the disconnect that takes place when students lack confidence and don’t “own” their education.

Stone has written a transformative new book, Own Your Education! A Student’s Guide to Greater Success in School (and Life) published by Pearson Education, Inc., the world’s leading education company. The book delivers easy to follow, actionable steps using real life examples that will change the way students see their entire school experience, and gives readers of any age the powerful tools and tips to build their confidence, motivate them and put them in control.

Stone shares her simple, yet ingenious, system that helps students of all ages thrive in school, as well as in life. Students entering the workforce will also benefit from the information – a major complaint of corporations is that they are weary of new hires coming in and not understanding how to take ownership of their responsibilities and do more than “their job”.

The concepts of commitment, hard work and planning are central to the heart of the book and Stone makes the topics simple to grasp and easy to implement. The fun-to-read format is designed to help students assess their understanding of educational content, take measure of their skills, and discusses how these tools pertain and effect the many facets of their education and beyond.

“This book is a result of my passion and belief that any student can learn how to be a success by using easy, but not obvious, strategies in their everyday life. As a teacher and a coach, I have worked with thousands of students developing their ability to advocate for themselves and take responsibility for their own actions through ownership,” said Author Megan Stone, founder and president of Stone Foundations of Learning. “It’s critical that students receive the tools they need to “do” their job of being a student. It may be a school to attend, a class to take, an internship to land, or a job to obtain. I have seen how disciplined practice of these practical tools increase student commitment, endurance and motivation, and carry forward into all aspects of their lives.”

About Megan Stone

Megan Stone, M.Ed., Founder and President of Stone Foundations of Learning, Inc. (www.stonefoundations.net) has worked with students and faculty across the country for more than 17 years, including teaching science in the highly ranked Edina and Eden Prairie Public Schools. Along with coaching students and families, she consults with school districts, colleges, and universities to better equip faculty to work with students who lack the tools to “do the job” of being a student and to build educational ownership. Megan has also created and written a college curriculum for students and faculty called the Ownership Series (www.pearsonhighered.com/educator/series/Ownership-Series/13402.page ). The series helps to reinforce the concept of student ownership so students are more likely to take responsibility for their success and failures in school and life.

4-booksDo you remember how you learned to ride a bike? It probably went something like, ‘put on the training wheels, learn to brake/steer; remove training wheels, try to ride with a strong hand on the back to keep you balanced, try on your own as you wobbled along; then fell a few times before you…rode away and never looked back’.

If you teach student ownership of these concepts in class, they are more likely to take responsibility for their successes and failures and “own” their learning. Our instructional materials are different than anything else on the market both in format and content. First, we offer a multimedia professional development course on Ownership in an easy-to-use online format that walks through teaching methods and includes ready-to-use activities, coaching tips, assessments, animations, and video
on a topic (ie. – Effective Planning). Second, we provide a short, affordable student print or digital booklet covering ownership essentials and the critical thinking topic that can be used independently or as part of your course.

Instructors will learn how to use this groundbreaking four-step process to teach ownership to any student in any class.  This method moves them from dependent to independent learning, so students can apply the process to any course and the workplace.

Infuse student success into any program with our “IDentity” Series booklets.  Written by national subject matter experts, the material contains strategies and activities for immediate application. If you like this IDentitySeries: Ownership topic, you’ll love the other choices.
